Phil McLean will introduce Self-Portraits for September on Thursday the 1st  from 7pm at Stills.
September’s theme is ‘Self-portraits’.  In many respects this theme should need no introduction, and no-one can pretend they couldn’t find a suitable subject, so I look forward to seeing lots of your work!
The self-portrait has been a staple of art for centuries, but we now live in the age of the selfie, a very recent phenomenon.  What does this mean for self-portrait photography?  Is there even a difference between self-portraits and selfies?
One suggestion made at the August DCC was for people to bring both a self-portrait and a selfie and discuss the differences (if any) – a great idea and could be very thought-provoking!
I’ll be looking at work by various photographers who have featured themselves in their work, such as Francesca Woodman, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Jeff Harris, John Coplans, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Siya Singh, and Nanna Saarhelo.
If you are in need of some inspiration you might want to head to the Portrait Gallery: https://www.nationalgalleries.org/whatson/on-now-coming-soon/facing-the-world/
Look forward to seeing you at Stills on Thursday 1st September at 7pm!
Cheers,
Phil.
